Online news portal, Modernghana.com journalists who were arrested by national security operatives were subjected to severe electric shock torture, editor of the news portal Emmanuel Ajafor Abugri has said.

According to Mr Abugri, the three journalist who were arrested on Thursday July 27, 2019 were also subjected to other forms of torture including physical assaults.

Speaking to JoyNews Monday, the editor explained that he was beaten up, slapped for unconvincing answers and "electric shocks applied to his manhood".

He added that the journalists were made to delete two articles they had published about the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah and asked to confess who was behind those articles.

A staff who narrated the incident leading to the arrest said gun-wielding operatives of the National security stormed the company’s office in Accra without a warrant and strapped the heads of two of the staff in black polythene bags.

The National Security Ministry had said the arrest of three staff of the news portal was in connection with alleged cyber crimes.

However, Mr Abugri who spoke in an interview after his release said there was no question about alleged cyber crimes.

Their captors focussed exclusively on the publication of two articles, he added.

One of the articles was related to a protracted conflict at the University of Education, Winneba.

The website published a story on National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah and governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
