A routine market journey ended in horror at Sefwi Asikuma in the Bia West District of the Western North Region, after a devastating road crash claimed the lives of six people and left two others fighting for survival.
The fatal accident involved an aboboyaa (tricycle) and a timber-laden truck, which collided head-on while travelling in opposite directions.
The tricycle was carrying its rider and seven market women at the time of the crash.
Eyewitnesses say the timber truck was moving at high speed, forcing the aboboyaa rider to swerve in a desperate attempt to avoid impact.
The manoeuvre proved futile, as the truck reportedly ploughed into the tricycle with crushing force.
The collision left the aboboyaa twisted beyond recognition, killing six occupants instantly.
Two women sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the Essam Cocoa Clinic, where they are currently receiving intensive medical treatment.
In the aftermath of the crash, the aboboyaa rider reportedly fled the scene and is yet to be traced. The driver of the timber truck, however, has been taken into custody and is assisting the police with investigations.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and emergency responders arrived promptly to secure the area and convey the injured to hospital.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue for preservation and identification.
Police have since launched a full investigation to establish the exact circumstances that led to the tragic incident, as renewed calls emerge for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations in the area.
