Six commercial drivers were arrested in Accra’s Central Business District on Saturday following an enforcement exercise against unapproved transport fares led by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey.

The operation, which started around 5:30 p.m. on December 27, targeted busy transport corridors along Kwame Nkrumah Avenue, stretching from the COCOBOD area to the Farisco traffic light. The routes serve commuters travelling to destinations such as Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa and Lapaz.

During the exercise, the Mayor and his taskforce stopped commercial vehicles to verify fares charged, comparing them with approved rates by engaging passengers on board. While most drivers complied with the approved pricing, six were found to have overcharged passengers and were arrested.

However, the drivers were later cautioned and released, with Mayor Allotey explaining that the first day of the exercise was intended to serve as a strong warning to deter future violations.

He stressed the need for sustained enforcement to promote fairness in public transport pricing and to prevent drivers from exploiting peak-hour demand to overcharge commuters.

In a symbolic gesture to reinforce the message, the Mayor paid the full lorry fares for passengers on a bus travelling to Lapaz, urging commuters not to pay beyond approved rates.

Mayor Allotey said the enforcement exercise would continue across the Accra metropolis, with strict monitoring and sanctions for offenders.

He also warned drivers and traders against activities that disrupt public order, assuring residents that the Assembly would maintain a visible presence along major routes to ensure discipline and protect road users.
