A six-year-old boy has died after drowning in an uncovered water storage tank at Kasoa Wallantu, prompting the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to issue a renewed warning about the dangers of open water facilities in residential areas.

The victim, identified as Godfred Aboagye, reportedly drowned on Monday, December 29, 2025, at a compound house in the area.

Preliminary information from fire investigators indicates that the child was playing when a ball fell into an open, ground-level water tank within the compound. In an attempt to retrieve it, the boy entered the tank but was unable to climb out.

The GNFS said it received a distress call at about 5:03 p.m. and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the scene. Despite arriving within minutes and completing the recovery operation by 5:28 p.m., the child was pronounced dead.

Godfred’s body was retrieved from the tank and handed over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further investigation.

In a statement signed by the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Divisional Officer Grade II Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Service cautioned parents, guardians and property owners to treat uncovered water storage facilities as serious safety hazards.

The GNFS urged residents to ensure that all water tanks, wells and pits are properly covered, especially in homes where children are present, noting that such incidents are often preventable.

The Service reiterated its commitment to public safety education and encouraged the public to familiarise themselves with emergency contact numbers to enable swift response in life-threatening situations.
