Spain thrash France in a 9-goal thriller to seal UEFA Nations League final berth
5th June 2025
The second semi final game of the ongoing UEFA Nations League came off at the MHPArena in Stuttgart, Germany as the "La Rojas" of Spain faced off against the "Les Bleus" of France in a fiercely locked encounter which ended 5-4; a nine-goal thriller where Luis de la Fuente's side saw off Didier Deschamps and his charges to advance to the final.
In the first semi final game between Portugal and Germany, the game ended 2-1 in favour of Portugal as they clinched their fourth ever major tournament final. A goal from Germany's Florian Wirtz opened the scoring on the 48th minute after captain, Joshua Kimmich had pulled off a wonderful assist to find the 22 year old who slotted in Germany's only goal of the game. Portugal responded in a grand style as Francisco Conceicao scored a wonderfully finessed goal to pull parity for the Portuguese before captain, Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the win for his side with a fine finish after an electrifying run from Nuno Mendes who found the Portugal record goal scorer. Portugal became the maiden winners of the competition in its inaugural edition in 2019 where they defeated The Netherlands by 1-0.
Spain's exuberant and energetic young team defeated France's much experienced side, hitting them with four unanswered goals before the hour mark until France had to regroup to start their comeback journey from 4-0 down which subsequently resulted in them not getting the adequate goals to get the game balanced even after they tried reducing the huge deficit.
Spain had their first goal through Spanish-born of Ghanaian decent, Nico Williams, who struck a powerful left-footed shot from about ten yards to open the flood gates of goals for the La Rojas on the 22nd minute of the game. It continued with Mikel Merino getting the second with a fine finish from the 18-yard box.
Spain got their third goal through a penalty converted by Lamine Yamal after which his Barcelona teammate, Pedri scored the fourth.
France came up to score their first goal via a penalty converted by Mbappe before Yamal had his brace of the game. France begun the equalizing journey goals from Manchester City-bound Rayan Cherki, an own goal from Bilbao's Dani Vivian before Randal Kolo Muani scored the final goal in the dying embers of the game-a dramatic semi final game in the city of Stuttgart ended in an intriguing fashion as Spain advanced to the final of the UEFA Nations League.
Spain will face Portugal in the final and it will be their 12th ever competitive meeting.
