Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has raised concerns about the direction of the Ghana national football team following the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo.
Addo was relieved of his duties after consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany national football team, results that have intensified scrutiny of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking at the launch of the third edition of the Democracy Cup, Bagbin expressed surprise at the decision and admitted he is struggling to recognise the current national team.
“You’re seeing what is happening with the national team; this cannot be Ghana. I was very, very surprised when I heard the coach was axed,” he said.
The Speaker also criticised the tactical approach in Ghana’s recent defeat to Germany, questioning the team’s attacking setup and decision-making on the pitch.
“When you have a short striker in front, the first measure is the speed of the striker against the defenders, then you know how to spin the balls for that striker to pick. What happened yesterday is not coaching,” he added.
With less than three months to the World Cup, pressure is mounting on the Ghana Football Association to appoint a new coach and restore stability within the squad.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Mexico and Wales in upcoming friendlies as part of their preparations for the tournament, where they will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.
