Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has voiced dissatisfaction with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, warning that Ghana still faces a tough road to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Minister’s comments follow the Black Stars’ inconsistent displays in recent qualifiers — a 1-1 draw with Chad in N’Djamena and a narrow 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.

Despite the vital win over Mali, Adams said the team’s overall performance was unconvincing.

“Very soon, AFCON is going to start in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? No, we will watch on TV. We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet,” Adams told Citi FM’s Breakfast Show.

“We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us.”

The Buem MP further stressed that he was not impressed with the work of Otto Addo, urging the coach to improve decision-making and consistency.

“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not. There is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits that he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is: for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?”

Ghana currently top Group I with 19 points from eight matches, three ahead of Madagascar (16) and four above Comoros (15). Mali trail on 12 points, with the Central African Republic on 5 and Chad bottom on just a single point.

The Black Stars will regroup in October for the final round of qualifiers:

  • Central African Republic (away)

  • Comoros (home, Accra Sports Stadium)

A win and a draw from those two games would seal Ghana’s ticket to the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
