The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has cautioned young people against the use of illicit drugs, warning that drug abuse poses serious risks to their health, social wellbeing and future prospects.

He said although government has put structures in place to support drug users through rehabilitation services, prevention remains the most effective approach, urging the youth to completely avoid drugs.

Dr. Amoakohene reiterated the government’s resolve to clamp down on the sale and use of hard drugs and appealed to young people involved in drug abuse to stop, while encouraging those willing to change to seek help from rehabilitation centres.
“As a young person, one does not need any booster to perform a task. Any drug taken should be prescribed by a health professional. Unfortunately, we are often tempted to experiment with drugs in our youth, which poses a threat to our health. This is why rehabilitation centres have been established to help addicts who are ready to overcome their addiction. Staying completely away from drugs is, however, the safest approach,” he said.

The Minister made the remarks on the sidelines of a donation exercise organised by the FrankCare Foundation, where assorted items including soft drinks, toiletries, bottled water, rice and other essentials were presented, along with a cash donation of GH¢10,000 each to the Edwenase Rehabilitation Centre and the Kumasi Cheshire Home.

Dr Amoakohene explained that the gesture forms part of efforts to ensure that vulnerable groups are included in the Christmas and New Year celebrations and are not left behind during the festive season.
