Swift rescue on Accra-Kumasi highway saves trapped motorist from wreckage

Emergency responders from Suhum’s fire service successfully extracted a motorist from mangled vehicle debris following a violent collision on the Accra-Kumasi corridor on Friday, June 26, 2026, preventing what could have escalated into a fatal outcome.

The incident unfolded at the Mile 44 position along the heavily trafficked intercity route, where a Toyota Hiace minibus and a MAN diesel articulated truck came together in a violent clash.

The impact left one occupant of the Hiace imprisoned within the twisted metal, prompting emergency calls to firefighting authorities.

A squad of six personnel deployed from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station mobilised specialised cutting and extraction apparatus to breach the compromised structure and liberate the trapped individual.

Their prompt action proved decisive — medical responders were able to stabilise the casualty and convey him to the Suhum Government Hospital for ongoing treatment of injuries sustained in the collision.

Damage assessments conducted at the scene revealed sharply divergent impacts on the two vehicles. The Toyota Hiace bore catastrophic structural compromise, its frame warped and panels crushed by the force of impact.

The MAN trailer, by contrast, sustained only superficial harm to its rear section — a disparity that underscored the smaller vehicle’s vulnerability in such an encounter.

Preliminary investigative findings suggest that the Hiace driver initiated an overtaking manoeuvre at the moment of impact, an action that may have precipitated the collision under circumstances that remain under examination.
