Slaughterhouses, or abattoirs, play a crucial role in the meat supply chain, serving as the link between inspected, safe meat and the consumer. To enhance meat safety in the Greater Tamale Metropolis, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has called on butchers to ensure the supply of hygienic and reliable meat to avoid incidents of meat poisoning.

In line with this commitment, the Assembly has constructed a modern abattoir at Gulpe, a suburb of Tamale, to promote proper meat handling and hygiene.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Abu Takoro, emphasized the Assembly’s dedication to the development of the metropolis.

“The provision of hygienic slaughtering and meat-handling facilities is essential for safeguarding public health and will also increase demand for safe and quality meat,” he stated.

He added that the Assembly is committed to the development and expansion of infrastructure critical to the city’s growth.

Chief Executive Takoro also urged beneficiaries to maintain the facility properly. “I urge you to ensure that the facility is well maintained and put to good use so that it stands the test of time. The Assembly will closely monitor its usage,” he cautioned.

The new abattoir is expected to improve meat safety standards, benefiting both consumers and meat traders in the Tamale metropolis.
