The Tarkwa District Court Two has sentenced 18-year-old student Bright Atanga to 18 months in prison for unlawful entry and stealing after he snatched a mobile phone from a student at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).

Atanga pleaded guilty to both charges when he appeared before the court, presided over by Isaac Osei Asare, Esq.

Prosecuting officer, Police Sergeant Adwoa Yeboah, told the court that the complainant, Samuel Dontoh, is a businessman residing at Nkamponase in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, while the convict lived in Cyanide, also within the municipality.

On April 14, 2025, police received a distress call that Atanga was being assaulted by a mob at Nkamponase, near the UMaT campus.

Officers rushed to the scene, rescued him, and took him to hospital for treatment before escorting him to the station for interrogation.

Later, Mr. Dontoh lodged a complaint at the station, stating that Atanga had scaled his fence wall after committing the theft.

During questioning, Atanga admitted to snatching the mobile phone from a UMaT student and said that while fleeing, he jumped into the complainant’s compound to escape his pursuers.

He was eventually caught by the mob, who retrieved the stolen phone.
