Fear and uncertainty has gripped the Nkawkaw Zongo community in the Kwahu West Municipality after a deadly shooting claimed the lives of three Fulani men and left a child seriously injured.
The attack occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, near a veterinary shop close to the Nkawkaw Zongo Barracks a known meeting point for the victims.
Eyewitnesses say masked gunmen ambushed the group, killing two men on the spot. A third victim, who attempted to escape, was chased and fatally shot moments later.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Wanto, 47; Abubakari Abdallah, 57; and Abubakar Mohammed, 56.
During the assault, a young boy was caught in the crossfire and sustained serious gunshot wounds. He is currently receiving treatment at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting many residents to flee the area amid fears of further violence.
Tensions are rising as calls mount for urgent government intervention. Some locals have demanded either the relocation of the Fulani community or the immediate bolstering of security in the area.
In response, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwahu West, Halidu Tamimu, assured residents that steps are being taken to restore safety.
“We are working closely with the Minister for Communication, Honourable Sam George, and the CEO of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Richard Karikari Kevor, to install CCTV cameras along the Zongo–Akuajoo stretch to monitor activities and deter crime,” he announced.
The Nkawkaw Central Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the killings.
While the suspects remain at large, authorities say they are following several leads to determine the motive behind the attack and apprehend those responsible.
As the community mourns, residents are calling for justice and a return to peace in Nkawkaw Zongo.
