Its exactly 16 years ago today when the Black Stars of Ghana played at its first ever World Cup tournament in Germany 2006.

Ghana qualified for the first time in 2006 after several fruitless attempts with a talented squad which some described as the golden generation of recent era.

I do not know where you were 16 years ago today but for me I was in form 2 at Opoku Ware School and I vividly remember the events of that day.

School unceremoniously closed early and TV's were set up in two of our assembly hall, as a football fanatic from childhood I sat right in front of the big TV screen at Burges Hall.

Going into the tournament, Ghana was the least ranked team in our group as at the time Czech Republic ranked 4th on the FIFA rankings and had elite players like Peter Cech, Milan Baros, Pavel Nedved among several others.

On paper, Ghana had no chance especially after losing our opening game against Italy 2-0.

But Ghana surprised everyone as they made nonsense of the pundits and caused a huge upset as Asamoah Gyan scored the opener one minute and eight seconds which was the fastest at the 2006 World Cup.

The whole Burges Hall erupted into raptures as everyone could not believe it that a less fancied  Black Stars is beating the overwhelming favourites.

Sulley Muntari later added the second goal to seal a sweet victory for Ghana as they recorded their first ever win at the FIFA World Cup.

Ghana’s starting line-up was the youngest of all teams at the 2006 World Cup with an average age of 24 years and 203 days.

The Black Stars became the first of the six debutants in Germany to gain a maximum point, the first African nation to win at this tournament and the eighth nation ever from the continent to complete a World Cup victory.

Asamoah Gyan is the African player with the most goals at the FIFA World Cup with six goals at three tournaments.
