Torkornoo’s removal is a political agenda to purge the judiciary– Alhassan Tampuli
Member of Parliament, for Gushegu, Alhassan Tampuli, has alleged that the ongoing proceedings against Ghana’s Chief Justice are part of a calculated political effort to restructure the judiciary.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Mr. Tampuli claimed the process is being used to fulfill a campaign promise to “purge” the judiciary, starting from the top.
“The issue before us is a premeditated one. During the electioneering campaign, we were told that this Chief Justice is not fit for purpose. In fact, we were told that they were going to purge the judiciary. They are going to purge the judiciary, and it starts from the top, so everything has been done in order to actualise this determined conclusion,” he said on June 28, 2025.
His comments come amid national debate over the Chief Justice’s suspension and the legal process underway to investigate allegations of misconduct.
Mr. Tampuli also challenged the interpretation of Article 146(8) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires proceedings concerning the removal of certain public officers, including the Chief Justice, to be held in camera.
“In camera means you can’t hold the meeting in public. It doesn’t mean that I can’t take my bodyguard, I can’t take my spouse, I can’t take my child. For instance, does in camera mean you can’t take your spouse? That’s not what the law says,” he said.
