A 14-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate, identified as Richmond, has died after being electrocuted at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred at White House, a suburb of Nkawkaw, during a heavy downpour that reportedly caused a high-tension electricity cable to snap and fall to the ground.
According to eyewitness accounts, Richmond was playing football when he came into contact with the live wire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Kwahu West Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Kingsley Agbesi, said preliminary findings suggest the boy may have fallen onto the exposed cable while playing.
He also cautioned against activities near power installations, especially during the rainy season, when such hazards increase.
He further urged residents to avoid farming or engaging in activities under power lines, stressing that vegetation can obstruct maintenance work and increase safety risks.
A landlord in the area, Yaw Afrifa, described the incident as devastating, noting that the community has been left in shock.
Residents are calling for stricter monitoring and maintenance of electricity infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The body has been deposited at the morgue as investigations continue.
