The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the management of Kotoka International Airport (KIA), has commenced expansion works at Terminal 2 in a strategic effort to ease congestion at Terminal 3 and boost overall airport efficiency.
The project, which will be executed in two phases, is designed to accommodate both domestic and international flights. The goal is to enhance KIA’s capacity to better handle the rising number of passengers and cargo.
During a recent working visit to the airport, Minister for Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, highlighted the pressing need for the expansion, citing growing congestion at Terminal 3 during peak travel hours.
“If you visit Terminal 3 at rush hour, you will realize that there is congestion,” the Minister stated. “We have divided Terminal 2 into two phases: one for domestic flights, and the area where we are currently standing will serve international flights. This way, we can transfer some of the load from Terminal 3, decongest it, and offer more comfort and space to our travelers.”
The project reflects a proactive response to the increased traffic at Terminal 3 in recent years, which has stretched the terminal’s capacity during peak periods.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the renovation and expansion of Terminal 2 are expected to significantly enhance the passenger experience by streamlining operations and improving service delivery across the airport.
The development aligns with broader efforts to modernize Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and position Kotoka International Airport as a leading hub in the sub-region.
