R&B singer Trey Songz has been arrested and arraigned in Manhattan on criminal charges stemming from two separate alleged violent incidents, including an alleged assault at a Times Square nightclub.
The artiste, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, was taken into custody early Sunday and charged with felony criminal mischief following an incident at Mira, a Midtown Manhattan hookah lounge.
According to police reports and court documents obtained by Billboard, Songz is accused of destroying property valued at more than $1,500, including hookahs, DJ equipment and sofas.
In a separate case, the singer was also charged with five misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment related to an incident on December 4 at DRAMMA, a two-storey nightclub in Times Square. Prosecutors allege that Songz punched a man in the face during an altercation at the venue.
Songz was arraigned on Sunday and released on his own recognisance. He is expected to return to court in February. If convicted on the felony criminal mischief charge, he could face a maximum sentence of up to seven years in prison.
Confirming the charges, Songz’s attorney, Mitchell Schuster, said his client is cooperating with authorities. Addressing the earlier assault allegations, Schuster stated that Songz “looks forward to the facts coming to light” but declined to provide further details.
On the alleged incident at Mira, Schuster said the singer was confronted by individuals who attempted to instigate a confrontation.
“Trey was confronted by individuals who instigated a confrontation and attempted to surround him. His security intervened to protect him and contain the situation, and an altercation occurred in the ensuing confusion,” Schuster said. He added that public figures are often targeted for provocation in pursuit of publicity or financial gain.
The latest charges add to a history of legal troubles for the singer. In 2017, Songz pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer after a concert in Detroit and was sentenced to 18 months of probation.
He was arrested again in 2021 following an altercation with police at an NFL game in Kansas City, though prosecutors later declined to pursue charges.
More recently, in July, Songz was investigated over allegations that he assaulted a cameraman and damaged equipment after a concert on Long Island, though it remains unclear whether charges were filed.
In addition to criminal matters, Songz has faced multiple civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct.
He previously settled claims related to an alleged assault at a Los Angeles house party in 2016 and is scheduled to stand trial next year over a separate alleged incident in Las Vegas in 2021.
In September, he also settled a lawsuit filed by Jauhara Jeffries, who accused him of assault during an encounter at a Miami nightclub in 2018.
