The Ghanaian boxing fraternity has been plunged into grief following the death of Ernest Akushey, popularly known in the ring as Bahubali.
The 32-year-old boxer died on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, less than two weeks after sustaining severe head injuries during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
In a deeply emotional interview with Ghanaweb, his twin sister, Naa Akweley, shared harrowing details of his last hours.
She revealed that after collapsing, the family desperately sought both spiritual and medical assistance to keep him alive.
“We took him to a church where the pastor prayed for him, and for a moment he seemed to recover. But soon after, his condition declined again.
We rushed him to Korle Bu, where doctors placed him on oxygen and he appeared stable. Not long after, I was shaken awake and told my brother was being covered with a cloth. I tried hitting his chest to revive him, but he never woke up,” she recounted, breaking down in tears.
Through her grief, she added: “My brother is gone. If this is God’s will, then I pray Oko blesses me with the strength to care for his children.”
Bahubali’s death has left his family and fans heartbroken. Known for his bravery and relentless energy in the ring, he had built a reputation as one of Ghana’s most spirited and determined boxers.
Tributes have poured in from fellow fighters, trainers, and fans, many describing his passing as an irreplaceable loss to Ghanaian boxing.
