Two men have been sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour for stealing a loaded firearm and ammunition belonging to an immigration officer in Walewale.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed the conviction in a statement issued on Friday, May 23, 2025.

The convicts, 18-year-old Mustapha Basit and 22-year-old Baba Rasid, were charged with conspiracy to steal and stealing.

They appeared before the Walewale Circuit Court on Thursday, May 22, and pleaded guilty to the charges.

Presiding Judge, Justice Francis Asobayeri, convicted the two on their own plea and sentenced them each to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Investigations revealed that on Saturday, May 17, around noon, the two, identified as 18-year-old Mustapha Basit and 22-year-old Baba Rasid entered the officer’s room in his absence.

They made away with a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition, along with two CZ rifle magazines, each containing 30 rounds.

They were charged with conspiracy to steal and stealing and appeared before the Walewale Circuit Court on Thursday, May 22.

After pleading guilty, they were convicted and sentenced by Justice Francis Asobayeri.

The police added that arrangements are underway to transfer the convicts to appropriate prison facilities to begin serving their sentences.

Authorities noted that the swift investigation and prosecution reflect the security agencies’ commitment to law and order, and urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to assist in maintaining public safety.
