The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana has stepped forward to address growing concerns among students over recent changes to third-party charges on their fee bills, offering explanations, corrections, and assurances.
In a statement released on December 16, 2025, the SRC disclosed that a GH¢312 charge linked to Telecel data was mistakenly applied to students’ accounts. According to the Council, the error has been identified, and the University’s Finance Directorate is already taking steps to reverse the charge.
The SRC clarified that only students who voluntarily subscribed to the Telecel data bundle are required to pay for the service. Those students will pay a total of GH¢122.64 for the entire academic year, while students who opted out will not incur any data-related charges.
Beyond the correction, the SRC announced the introduction of a GH¢200 SRC Hostel Development Levy. The levy, it explained, is a long-term investment aimed at addressing the persistent accommodation crisis on campus. The proposed SRC-owned hostel project is expected to provide affordable housing for up to 15,000 students once completed.
On the matter of UGEL Hall fees, the SRC acknowledged a 20 percent increase but revealed that the final figure followed intense negotiations. Management had initially proposed a 29 percent hike, but pushback from the SRC and Junior Common Room (JCR) executives led to a reduced increment. The Council attributed the adjustment to rising operational costs, particularly electricity and water tariffs.
Reaffirming its role as the voice of students, the SRC assured the student body that it remains committed to accountability, fairness, and transparency. It pledged to continue engaging university authorities to protect students’ interests while working toward sustainable solutions to accommodation and cost-of-living challenges on campus.
The SRC encouraged students to stay informed and engaged, emphasizing that student welfare remains at the heart of all its decisions.
