President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a transitional management committee to oversee the formal transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the direct control of the University of Ghana.
The move is part of a broader strategy to integrate teaching, research, and clinical services under a unified institutional structure, with the goal of enhancing operational efficiency and positioning UGMC as a world-class teaching hospital.
Speaking at the inauguration of the nine-member committee, President Mahama described the transition as a strategic realignment not just an administrative shift.
“The next phase of our vision calls for the full integration of UGMC into the University of Ghana’s governance and operational structures. This is not a mere administrative action. It is a strategic alignment designed to promote synergy between clinical service delivery, teaching and research, to enhance institutional efficiency through harmonised leadership and resource management."
"To encourage inter-disciplinary collaboration between medical professionals, researchers and academics, and most importantly, to create a truly world-class teaching hospital that serves the needs of Ghana and the wider West African sub-region,” the President said. President Mahama noted that the transitional process will be guided by a committee co-chaired by two distinguished Ghanaians, whose expertise and leadership will be key to the success of the handover. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, also addressed the gathering, pledging the university’s full support for the transition.
“This is just the beginning of the process, but as we go through this process, we pledge our full support for the transition team. Whatever support that we need to provide, logistics and otherwise, we will do so for the smooth work of the committee,” she stated.
The transition is expected to significantly strengthen the University of Ghana’s role in medical education and research, while enhancing UGMC’s capacity to deliver cutting-edge healthcare.
