Senior staff across Ghana’s public universities have declared an indefinite strike, effective Wednesday, May 21, over the government's failure to honour a six-month-old agreement aimed at improving their conditions of service.
The industrial action is being jointly led by the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana.
The unions allege that both the previous and current government have failed to implement the six-month-old agreement aimed at improving their conditions of service.
National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Ghana, George Ansong, said the strike was a measure of last resort after all attempts at dialogue had failed.
"The Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUWAG) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) announce, with deep regret but unwavering resolve, our decision to embark on an indefinite strike action,” Mr Ansong stated.
According to Mr. Ansong, the strike is a difficult but necessary decision, because the government has repeatedly failed to fulfill the terms of a signed agreement dating back six months.
The deal was meant to address key issues related to salaries, benefits, and general conditions of service.
He noted that despite numerous engagements and extended timelines no meaningful progress had been made.
“The government has continuously reneged on its commitment, thereby undermining the trust and cooperation that should exist between both parties,” he said.
