The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has officially responded to growing online debate following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing students being barred from attending class due to violations of the university’s dress code.

In a statement issued by Dr. Ibn Kailan Abdul-Hamid, head of the university’s marketing department, UPSA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a professional dress code as a foundational part of its mission to cultivate discipline, professionalism, and integrity among students.

The controversial video, which has sparked mixed reactions across social media, depicted what appeared to be an enforcement incident involving students. While some users have criticized the dress code as rigid and outdated, others have supported it as critical preparation for the corporate environment.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid described the video as unauthorized and cautioned against drawing conclusions from a single viewpoint. He announced that the university has launched an internal inquiry into the incident and urged the public to await the findings.

He stressed that the university’s dress code was not a random imposition but a deliberate policy grounded in its educational philosophy: “The University’s professional dress code is not arbitrary. It is rooted in a philosophy that prepares students for real-world expectations in corporate Ghana and beyond.”

Dr. Abdul-Hamid acknowledged the evolving cultural and generational landscape, particularly the influence of Gen Z’s approach to self-expression. However, he maintained that while UPSA encourages individuality, it must be aligned with professional conduct and standards.

“We do not seek to suppress individuality,” he stated. “Rather, we aim to harmonize personal expression with professional expectations.”

He assured stakeholders—alumni, parents, and corporate partners—that the university is committed to remaining progressive while staying true to its core values.

“UPSA is not just an academic institution,” the statement emphasized. “It is a professional brand. And like any strong brand, it evolves—but never loses sight of what it stands for.”
