Former Nigeria midfielder Mutiu Adepoju believes Victor Osimhen’s attacking qualities can help Galatasaray defend their Turkish Super Lig title next season.

The reigning champions made Osimhen the most expensive incoming transfer in Turkish football history, signing the Nigeria international from Napoli for €75 million ($85.74 million) on a four-year permanent deal. The move followed a successful loan spell during which he impressed across competitions.

Osimhen’s arrival broke the previous record held by Youssef En-Nesyri, who joined Fenerbahce from Sevilla for €20 million in July last year.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Adepoju backed the 26-year-old’s decision to stay with the Istanbul giants.

“Osimhen is already well loved at Galatasaray. He won the league and cup with them last season, so he’s familiar with the environment. That continuity matters,” Adepoju said.

“He’s a strong character and a proven goalscorer. Galatasaray have got a striker who can help them defend their title and make an impact in the Champions League.”

“I’m happy for him and I hope this next chapter goes well for both him and the club. If you remember, I said I wanted him to go where he would be happy. Judging from his comments when he arrived in Turkey, I think he is.”

Osimhen scored 26 goals last season and set a new record as the highest-scoring foreign player in a single Turkish league campaign, with 37 goals in all competitions.

The former Lille and Wolfsburg striker has 26 goals in 40 international appearances for Nigeria.
