Italy's Serie A was at its height in the 1990s, and few points were as high as one that took place 20 years ago. On September 8, 1996, AC Milan's George Weah scored a goal against Hellas Verona that's all but certain to be in any conversation about the greatest goals of all time.

With Milan 2-1 up with less than 10 minutes left to play, the Liberian picks up a misplaced Verona corner in his own 18-yard box.

Weah sets off on a run, and finding Verona unprepared for a direct assault following the corner, he simply keeps on running...and doesn't stop.

The Liberian makes it past the halfway line unmolested, but trouble lurks ahead.

Just as he exits the centre circle, two Verona defenders close on him - one goes to ground and gets a small piece of the ball.

No matter. Weah has kept his eye on the ball through the defence's pincer manoeuvre, and recovers it with a neat pirouette.
At this point the reigning World Footballer of the Year stops messing about and turns on the after-burners.

He pushes the ball past the one defender left who has a chance to stop him, and easily outruns the rest of the chasing pack.

At the edge of the Verona area, Weah fires a shot which bounds past the keeper and into the net at the far post.
It is  a stunner of a goal, and one that helps keep Weah's legend alive.

As an international for a side that never qualified for a World Cup, Weah's profile was never quite as high as it could have been.

After starting his club career in West Africa, Weah had his greatest success in a 12-year stretch that took him from Monaco to Paris St Germain to AC Milan.

The Liberian finished his career with brief stints at Chelsea, Manchester City, Marseille and at Al Jazira in the UAE Pro League.

Now Weah is a humanitarian-turned-politician in his native Liberia, serving in the country's Senate since 2014.

His goal against Verona is timeless.
