Former District Chief Executive of Akwatia and elder brother of the late Ernest Kumi, Seth Birikorang Ofosu, has recounted the final days leading to the unexpected death of the Akwatia legislator.
Speaking during a visit by Members of Parliament to the bereaved family, he shared a solemn account of the young MP’s final moments.
According to him, the two had recently traveled together to Takoradi to attend a funeral. They returned to Accra on Sunday, seemingly in good spirits and health.
What followed was a sudden decline that no one anticipated. T
he passing of Ernest Kumi has sent shockwaves across Ghana’s political landscape, especially within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), where he was widely regarded as one of the most promising new entrants in Parliament.
A first-time lawmaker, Kumi had only just begun to make his mark following a hard-fought victory in the December 2024 general elections.
His win in Akwatia, a constituency often caught in the crossfire of political rivalry between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was seen as a pivotal moment in the party’s campaign.
His passion for governance and relentless focus on constituency development quickly earned him admiration across the aisle.
Tributes have poured in from fellow MPs, political figures, and constituents, who described him as humble, principled, and deeply committed to public service.
Many had expected him to become a leading voice in Parliament, especially on matters of national development.
Kumi’s short time in office was not without controversy. In February 2025, he made headlines after being cited for contempt by the Koforidua High Court in connection with an electoral dispute.
The Supreme Court later overturned the ruling, clearing him of any wrongdoing—a moment seen by supporters as a testament to his character and integrity.
Now, just months after overcoming that legal hurdle, Ernest Kumi’s untimely death has cast a dark shadow over Parliament. Lawmakers have suspended proceedings in his honour, while funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
His death marks not only a personal tragedy for his family but also a significant loss to the nation. Ghana has lost a young, driven leader whose future in politics seemed all but assured—cut short before it could fully bloom.
