Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been physically assaulted and pushed to the ground during violent scenes that marred the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The incident unfolded at St. Peter’s polling station, one of the 19 centres involved in the rerun, when a group of unidentified macho men stormed the area. Eyewitnesses described the attackers as moving in a coordinated fashion, creating chaos and panic among voters.
The violent intrusion temporarily halted the voting process and triggered widespread confusion.
During the chaos, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, and a female polling agent affiliated with the party were also assaulted.
Both women reportedly sustained facial injuries and were seen with visible swelling and bruises.
Hawa Koomson’s fall to the ground, witnessed by several onlookers, drew outrage and calls for accountability. Security forces were quickly deployed to the scene to contain the situation and restore order, allowing voting to resume shortly afterward.
The rerun was necessitated by unresolved disputes from the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election, which left the constituency without a Member of Parliament for several months.
Although the NPP officially boycotted the rerun, accusing the Electoral Commission of disregarding court orders, its candidate Nana Akua Afriyie chose to participate independently, citing her commitment to represent the people of Ablekuma North.
Friday’s violence has heightened tensions in the constituency, drawing criticism from civil society and political observers concerned about the safety of electoral stakeholders and the integrity of the democratic process.
Security agencies have yet to confirm any arrests, but investigations are expected to follow in the wake of the attacks.
