Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has openly declared his belief that Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has the potential to become Ghana’s first female President.
He made the remarks during the Vice President’s official visit to the Ministry of Education, where he lauded her leadership qualities and pledged his support should she seek the nation’s highest office.
“It is my personal wish that you are elevated to become the first female President of our country,” Mr. Iddrisu said, assuring her of his “unwavering support” for any future presidential ambitions.
The Vice President’s visit formed part of her wider engagements with government ministries and agencies.
Recent polling by Global InfoAnalytics (April 2025) suggests strong public support for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, placing her ahead of other potential contenders with 26% voter preference.
Haruna Iddrisu followed with 19%, while Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson ranked third with 12%. NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa both polled at 10%.
However, a separate survey excluding the Vice President showed Haruna Iddrisu leading the pack with 27% support, narrowly ahead of Asiedu Nketia on 26%.
Dr. Ato Forson came in third with 22%, while Chief of Staff Julius Debrah (11%) and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (8%) completed the top five.
The Education Minister’s endorsement adds further weight to growing speculation about the Vice President’s political future as the ruling party positions itself ahead of the next general elections.
