Ghanaian comedian and skit maker, Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi, widely known as Akabenezer or Dr. Likee, recently shared his early football journey, revealing that he played for the youth team Auroras before transitioning to the senior side, Accra Hearts of Oak.
Akabenezer recounted his experience from the early 2000s when he and former Hearts of Oak forward Louis Agyemang underwent trials together. Despite facing disappointment, he decided to pursue a different path.
In an interview with Pure FM, a radio station based in Kumasi, he mentioned that his football career began as a defender in Tafo, a neighborhood in Kumasi, before he joined Auroras and later Hearts of Oak.
He stated, "I played for Auroras and Hearts of Oak alongside Louis Agyemang in the early 2000s, but my football career was short-lived. We were among five players who went for trials to prove our worth, and while both Louis Agyemang and I were selected, I didn't get as much playing time as he did."
"Our trials were arranged by a former Black Starlets Team Manager named Adabanka. Ultimately, it was only Louis Agyemang who successfully made the transition. We were the pioneers who brought the second division to Tafo, and it's worth noting that the best footballer in the Ashanti Region originated from Tafo," he added.
He has now found fame in the entertainment industry and has appeared in several commercials.
