Students, staff, and alumni of Juaben Senior High School gathered on Friday, August 1, 2025, to pay tribute to one of their most illustrious old students — the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.
The emotional candlelight vigil, held on the school’s campus, came just days after the iconic musician passed away at the Bank Hospital in Accra on Saturday, July 26, following a brief illness. He was 60.
Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta in the Ashanti Region, Lumba was the son of Johnson Kwadwo Fosu and Ama Saah.
He began his music journey while still a student at Juaben SHS, where he formed his first band — a humble beginning that would blossom into a groundbreaking music career.
After relocating to Germany in 1983, Lumba teamed up with longtime friend Nana Acheampong to release their debut album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu in 1989.
The project’s massive success laid the foundation for Lumba’s solo career, which would span over 40 years.
With over 30 albums 202 songs to his name, Daddy Lumba became a household name through unforgettable hits like Aben Wo Ha, Theresa, Yentie Obiaa, Akwanoma and Tokrom.
His ability to fuse traditional highlife rhythms with gospel, pop, and Afrobeats made him a versatile and enduring musical figure.
Lumba’s lyrics, often exploring themes of love, faith, betrayal, and resilience, struck a chord with millions across generations. His artistry, voice, and stage presence set a standard that few have matched.
The vigil at his former school was not only a moment of remembrance but a celebration of a man who inspired countless people and helped redefine Ghanaian music.
As candles lit up the night and songs of remembrance filled the air, one thing became clear: Daddy Lumba may be gone, but his music and legacy will live on.
