Mohammed Abdul Salam, National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sharply criticized the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the arrest of Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries.
Describing the arrest as “crude and brutal,” Abdul Salam condemned the manner in which National Security operatives reportedly handled the operation. He revealed that Jumah was taken into custody without prior notice and had his phone and other electronic devices confiscated. The reasons for his arrest, however, remain undisclosed.
Abdul Salam expressed deep concern over what he termed a growing pattern of political intimidation targeting former government officials. He accused the NDC administration of bypassing due legal process by using state security apparatus to harass individuals instead of pursuing transparent judicial procedures.
He also decried the alleged violation of constitutional provisions, particularly the detention of individuals beyond the 48-hour limit. According to him, such actions are unlawful and mark a significant departure from the practices of previous administrations.
“This approach undermines the principles of justice and due process,” Abdul Salam asserted, calling on the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is pursued through the appropriate legal channels.
Mr. Jumah was apprehended at his residence in Kumasi on Sunday, June 29, 2025, following a request by security officials to engage with him. He was later transported in a pickup vehicle to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, where he is currently being held.
