Controversial prophet-turned-entertainment pundit, Prophet Kumchacha, has made a bold and unverified claim that former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan intentionally missed the crucial penalty against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup due to his political affiliations with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on Saturday, September 14, 2024, Kumchacha suggested that Gyan, a known supporter of the NPP, missed the penalty to deny the then-ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) any political glory that would have come with Ghana's historic advancement to the semi-finals.
"You know that Asamoah Gyan is an NPP member. He deliberately missed the penalty in 2010 because the NDC was in power, and he knew that if he scored, the glory would go to the party," Kumchacha claimed.
The incident in question occurred during the 2010 World Cup quarter-final match between Ghana and Uruguay.
In the final moments of extra time, Gyan had the chance to send Ghana through to the semi-finals—the first for any African nation—after Luis Suárez handled the ball on the goal line.
However, Gyan’s shot struck the crossbar, and Uruguay eventually won the match in a penalty shootout.
The penalty miss remains one of the most painful moments in Ghana’s football history, but Kumchacha's allegations are unlikely to sit well with Gyan's supporters or football fans, given the emotional impact of the event and Gyan’s overall contribution to Ghanaian football.
Asamoah Gyan has not yet responded to these claims.
