Former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has appealed to delegates of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to carefully reconsider any support for presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, arguing that the party must present a candidate with integrity and broad public appeal.
According to her, the NPP cannot afford to go into a national election with a flagbearer whose public record includes remarks she described as disrespectful to women.
She cited comments made by Mr Agyapong during her prolonged absence from Parliament in 2022, noting that the remarks were made despite their shared parental responsibilities.
Addressing party supporters, Adwoa Safo questioned the suitability of such a candidate for the party’s highest ticket.
“Are you going to vote for a man who insults a woman? Why would you vote for a man who insults a woman? When I had issues, haven’t you heard him insult me? He said I do not respect, that I have embezzled state money, and even claimed I have cover under Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration,” she said.
She further alleged that Mr Agyapong made additional derogatory statements about her character and upbringing, warning that such comments could be politically damaging.
“He went as far as to say I am useless and that my father could not control me. If you ignore this and vote for him, the NDC will use his record against us,” she cautioned.
Adwoa Safo disclosed that she is backing former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the race, explaining that her position is rooted in political strategy rather than personal grievances.
“I am a politician, and Honourable Kennedy Agyapong is also a politician. Just as he has his opinions and ambitions, I have mine, and I am pursuing my political career,” she stated.
She was quick to stress that her stance should not be interpreted as personal hostility, noting their family ties.
“I do not hate Honourable Kennedy Agyapong. We have two beautiful children together, one male and one female; therefore, this is not a matter of family or personal animosity. It is about the direction of the NPP party,” she added.
The NPP’s presidential primaries, slated for 31 January 2026, are expected to be highly competitive.
Dr Bawumia is set to face stiff opposition from Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, as the party seeks a candidate it believes can reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
