Tensions flared in Asamankese in the Eastern Region over the weekend after a violent confrontation between residents and police left two people with gunshot wounds.
The unrest reportedly stemmed from a long-standing chieftaincy dispute involving self-proclaimed chief Ateabisa Kentinka Pobi Asomaning.
According to reports available to Ghanaguardian.com, Asomaning organised a grand funeral for his late mother and five relatives at his Beposo residence and later attempted to bury them at the royal mausoleum — a move the legitimate chief, Osabarima Adu Darko III, and his elders firmly opposed.
The disagreement quickly escalated, with supporters of both factions clashing near the palace.
Police officers stationed at the scene intervened to prevent further escalation and to secure the Asamankese chief’s palace and the royal cemetery.
However, after receiving intelligence that some youth were armed within the palace, police moved in to arrest the suspects — an operation that triggered violent resistance.
Enraged residents reportedly mounted roadblocks and hurled stones and other objects at police vehicles.
Amid the chaos, two individuals sustained gunshot injuries.
Additional police reinforcements were later deployed to restore calm and disperse the crowds.
Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting and to bring those responsible for the violence to justice.
