Former Black Meteors striker Samuel Obeng Gyabaa featured for Wydad Athletic Club in their opening Group F fixture of the FIFA Club World Cup, which ended in a 2-0 defeat to English champions Manchester City at Lincoln Field.

The match was marred by a moment of controversy in the second half when City defender Rico Lewis was shown a straight red card after a reckless sliding challenge caught Obeng Gyabaa in the face.

Lewis, attempting to win a 50/50 ball, caught the Ghanaian forward with his boot in what appeared to be an accidental collision, but the referee deemed it dangerous enough for a dismissal — much to the shock of the City bench.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Pep Guardiola's men secured the win thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku.

Foden opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Wydad goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid failed to clear a low cross from Savinho.

Doku then added a spectacular second just before halftime, acrobatically finishing a Foden corner with a scorpion kick.

Samuel Obeng, who joined Wydad in February 2025 from Portuguese side Casa Pia FC, was introduced in the 62nd minute, replacing Nordin Amrabat.

He applied high pressing against City's backline but couldn't influence the scoreline, as the Moroccan side struggled to break through the Premier League giants’ defense.

Wydad will now turn their attention to a crucial second group game against Juventus on Sunday, June 22, also at Lincoln Field, as they aim to bounce back and keep their hopes of progression alive.
