Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has taken part in his first training session with Villarreal following his summer switch from Arsenal.

The 32-year-old signed a one-year contract — with an option for an additional 12 months — to return to La Liga, where he previously starred for Atletico Madrid.

Partey joined his new teammates at the Ciudad Deportiva on Friday, going through fitness drills before taking part in a training match as preparations intensify for the 2025/26 season.

The Black Stars vice-captain chose Villarreal largely due to the lure of Champions League football, despite receiving lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and interest from other European clubs.

Known for his composure and experience in midfield, Partey is expected to play a pivotal role as the Yellow Submarine aim for a deep run in Europe’s elite competition and a strong domestic campaign.

His move brings an end to a five-year spell at Arsenal, where he made 167 appearances, scored nine goals, and helped the club challenge for major honours. Last season, he enjoyed his most productive campaign in England, featuring 52 times across competitions, scoring four goals, and registering three assists.
