General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has served notice that the NDC will square up to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) vigilante groups disturbing the peace of the nation.

According to Mr. Nketiah, the failure of President Akufo-Addo to do away with the pro-NPP vigilante groups in the country have resulted in them allowing same, to protect lives and properties.

He said they won’t sit aloof and watch the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) disturb their peace with vigilante groups without putting in place their own security measures.

“Who has been put in charge of the Nation? so if the nation has been put under your care to protect us and you are the commander in chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, including the Police Force and in spite of all that you still have vigilante groups who go around causing mayhem, knowing that preservation is the first law of nature, people can also decide to protect themselves” he told Kweku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa.

Over the weekend, there were reports of activities of the pro-NDC vigilante groups, the Hawks, in the Ashanti Region during the Regional elections of the party.

The Hawks, it is believed, stormed the venue where the polls were being conducted allegedly under the instructions of Joseph Yamin, former Ashanti Regional minister.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah indicated that his party is not against the formation of vigilante groups by its members as far as the ones belonging to the governing party still exist.

“We won’t allow only the NPP to protect themselves, with all the state security and also add vigilante group, whiles we put our hands on our head not knowing who to protect us, NPP members are not the only citizens in this country, we equally need protection and if the nation cannot guarantee us one, we will protect ourselves”
After all we can’t sit for them to come and kill us like goats, until the president who is the leader of this country acts on this trend, we will continue to protect ourselves” he said.
