A founding member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Major (rtd) Kwadwo Boakye-Djan, has said the state of functionalism within the party makes him uncomfortable.

According to the Former Spokesperson for the defunct Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), the tall list of  NDC members from the Volta Region who are publicly opposing the return of  Former President Mahama is a dangerous thread for the party.

This situation, he said, is unhealthy for the main opposition party.

NDC Volta stalwarts, James Victor Gbeho, Ken Dzirasah and Richard Quashigah recently called on members of the party and its grassroots, to support Prof. Joshua Alabi to become the next flag bearer.

In a meeting with supporters of the NDC in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, Ambassador Gbeho said: “My brother (Hon Ken. Dzirasah) and I sat down one afternoon by the riverside in Sogakope. We thought a lot about our party. We thought a lot about the younger generation. And we asked ourselves who can lead us now? After consultation, we agreed that our best hope was in no other person than Professor Joshua Alabi.”

Speaking in an interview, Major (rtd) Boakye-Djan who is supporting the return of former President Mahama asked: “How come all the people who are rooting for Alabi are from the Volta Region? All the regions support Mahama apart from Volta.”

He added: “I want to warn them: they should tread carefully and not try to bring division into the party on ethnic and regional basis. This is a very dangerous trend and they should watch out.

“Gbeho, Quashigah and Dzirassah who are all from Volta Region, are rooting for Alabi and I feel very uncomfortable with that.”

The NDC has set 7 December 2018 for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2020 polls.

This was announced by General Secretary Johnson Aseidu Nketia at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, 2 August 2018.

Mr Nketia, has directed that all hopefuls must first inform the party of their intention to contest before campaigning.

Mr. Mahama who is likely to contest the flagbearer slot for the NDC will have to beat competition from former UPSA vice chancellor Professor Joshua Alabi, Second deputy speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, former NHIA boss Sylvester Mensah and his former Trade minister Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah.
