Voting ends in Akwatia by-election, counting underway
Voting has officially ended in the Akwatia Constituency by-election, with electoral officers now counting ballots across the 119 polling stations.
The Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed that polls closed at exactly 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, following a full day of voting. Counting is currently underway under the close supervision of party agents, security personnel, and independent election observers.
The by-election, triggered by the death of the incumbent MP Ernest Kumi, has been fiercely contested by the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Asumadu and the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Bernard Bediako Bediako.
Despite isolated tensions earlier in the day, voter turnout was described as encouraging. Security forces maintained a strong presence throughout the exercise to ensure order and calm.
The Electoral Commission is expected to collate and announce the final results later tonight.
