Huda Suglo Suleman, the Overall Best Candidate at the 2025 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Distinction Awards, has encouraged young female students to challenge gender stereotypes and pursue excellence in whatever fields they choose.
Huda, a former student of Legacy Girls College, received the top honour at the awards ceremony held in Accra. She emphasised that gender should never limit a person’s academic or professional aspirations.
Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the event, she urged girls to remain confident in their abilities and strive to achieve their full potential.
“My advice to other female students is that they should not use gender as an excuse for not becoming the best. They can perform just as well as men, and even better. If they put in the necessary effort and persevere, they will achieve their goals and do even more,” she said.
As the Overall Best Candidate, Huda received several prizes from WAEC and supporting donors, including $1,200, GH¢30,000, an additional GH¢10,000, and a range of learning materials to support her academic journey.
She is currently pursuing a degree in Mechatronics Engineering at Ashesi University.
Other students recognised at the ceremony included Paula Adzo Elinam Sowu, also of Legacy Girls College, who was named Second Overall Best Candidate, and Matthea Aba Andoh from Hope College, who placed Third Overall Best Candidate.
