Ghana's national U17 team, the Black Starlets lose their second group game in the ongoing WAFU B U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as they fall 3-0 to hosts, Ivory Coast on Tuesday evening.
Heading into Tuesday's encounter against Ivory Coast, the Black Starlets, commenced their campaign at the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Togo and needed to secure a win against the hosts to better their chances of advancing to the next stage of the competition.
The Black Starlets were unfortunately beaten by hosts, Ivory Coast, as they took charge of the home advantage and cruised past their neighbours to an emphatic 3-0 victory at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.
Robinho Gavi Yao powered the hosts to their first goal of the day, finding the back of the net with a smart finish on the 18th minute mark.
With Ghana's inability to repsond before halftime, things went from bad to worse in the second half, as Ivory Coast scored twice after the break to seal an emphatic 3-0 victory, capitalizing on Ghana’s lack of structure and urgency.
Despite flashes of promise from Ghana’s midfield, the team struggled to convert chances and looked overwhelmed by the hosts’ pace and precision as all of Ghana's diverse ways of getting back into the game proved futile.
The Black Starlets must now defeat Niger in their final group match on Friday, September 26, to stand any chance of progressing to the knockout stage. Head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum will need to rally his squad and address tactical lapses, particularly in finishing and defensive transitions.
