Some Kumawood movie stars have shared their reasons for campaigning for president-elect John Mahama in the just-ended elections.
According to Big Akwess, Christiana Awuni and Okomfo Kolege, their motivation to rally against the Akufo-Addo administration was on the back of unfulfilled promises to create sustainable solutions to the problems facing the film industry.
They made these revelations when they appeared on Daybreak Hitz on Friday, December 13, 2024.
“People think we came out to support NDC because of selfish gains but it is not so. We did this for Ghana” she told Doreen Avio.
Adorned in a print of National Democratic Congress (NDC) paraphernalia, actress Christiana Awuni explained she was to celebrate the victory of John Mahama, a comment which was seconded by Big Akwess.
Christiana Awuni explained that the Creative Arts Industry is more than just the entertainment industry and that she added her voice to advocate for better.
She explained that they unveiled to campaign for a better government for Ghana and the youth of Ghana in the creative arts industry to curb the hardship that resides.
Contributing to the conversation, actor Big Akwess recounted a meeting in August 2015, where President Nana Akufo-Addo promised to address the plights of the Kumawood industry.
Big Akwess mentioned the three expectations that the NPP government failed to address as; the need for a film industry which requires a cinema, the passing of a bill to regulate the excessive promotion of foreign telenovelas over local talent and lastly, the building of a film village.
He said passionately, “he has frustrated us. He said it and never did it”.
The actor added that they informed John Mahama of these plights, and have his word for development moving forward.
Adding to the conversation, actor Okomfo Kolege expressed hopefulness for the industry to thrive as before for the benefit of the country.
He explained that Mr. Mahama began tending to the needs of the creative industry but since his term was up, he could not do more.
“I pray Mahama will continue the good works he was doing for the creative arts industry so we boom as we should”, the actor remarked.
