While the perils of being overweight are well known by everyone and a lot of weight-loss solutions are readily available, not many understand the struggle behind being skinny or underweight. In fact, just as it is with being overweight, being skinny too invites a lot of hurtful comments and name calling. For some people, gaining weight can be just as difficult as losing weight is for others. Read Vivek’s mindblowing weight gain journey to get inspired.

Name: Vivek Sharma Occupation: Physics teacher Age: 26 years Lowest weight recorded: 38 kgs Weight gained: 25 kgs Duration it took me to gain weight: 2 years Turning point: For 3 straight years of my college, I had to get all my clothes stitched! With a waistline of 26 inches, I did not get any clothes of my size in the market. This made me feel really, really under confident. My Breakfast: For my breakfast, I have one banana with a glass of milk. My Lunch: I have one glass of pure juice with a bowl of daal, 2 chapatis and some green vegetables. My Dinner: A bowl of daal, some green vegetables with 2 chapatis. I also make it a point to have a glass of milk before bedtime. My workout: I go for a morning walk daily Fitness secrets I unveiled: Although I needed to gain weight, I completely steered clear of oily and junk food. Instead, I opted for fresh fruits and vegetables, dry fruits and nuts. How do I stay motivated? Being underweight had made it really difficult for me to buy clothes of my size as I had to get them stitched. To add to my woes, I did not have a lot of friends back then. Ultimately, my sole motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle is the fear that I will go back to my underweight and under confident skinny self. How do you ensure you don’t lose focus? I keep seeing my old photographs to stay right on the fitness track. What’s the most difficult part of being skinny/underweight? I was so skinny that I looked like a hanger. It was really demotivating and heartbreaking to not be able to wear the clothes of my choice. What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I want to maintain the same physique, as of now.

What are the lifestyle changes you made? For starters, I increased the intake of fatty food in my diet, including milk and butter. I also ensured that I ate green vegetables which provided me with a sufficient amount of nutrients. I believe in the saying that your body is your temple, treat it accordingly.

What was the lowest point for you? It was really demotivating when I had a waist size of a mere 26 inches. I felt really, really low.

Lessons learnt from weight gain: I feel a lot more confident now, which is very necessary for my profession. The biggest fear of my life is going back to where I had started from i.e. being the skinny self who hardly had any friends.
