24 years old Naina Singh is a journalism student who moved to Bengaluru for her college. Blessed with beautiful features, Naina was surprised by the number of people who commented on her weight and felt an authority to tell her she needed to lose weight. Angry and hurt, she decided to give a befitting reply and started on a weight loss quest. Her transformation is jaw-dropping, to say the least.

Name: Naina Singh Occupation: Student Age: 24 years old Highest weight recorded: 98 kgs Weight loss: 50 kgs Duration it took me to lose weight: 1 year The turning point: After I moved to Bengaluru for my college, I was awestruck by how much people took care of their fitness and appearance there, so much so, that it made me very conscious of my own appearance. I weighed a whopping 98 kgs. People around me started praising my facial features, but would always finish off by saying that I would look fabulous if I were thin. Constantly hearing such back-handed compliments and suggestions frustrated me so much that I decided to lose weight. My breakfast: Poha, fruit salad, idli or two boiled egg My lunch: Daal with some green vegetables, salad and sprouts My Snack: Fruit salad and a glass of juice My dinner: Daal, salad and green vegetables I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): Biryani, shawarma and burgers are my absolute favourites, but I make sure that I don’t let my cravings mess with my normal diet plan. My workouts: For more than four months, I did not join any gym. Hence, I used to do cardio at home and some yoga. After a while, I realised that I had to tone my loose muscles and that’s when I decided to hit the gym. My daily workout includes 50 minutes of cardio and weight lifting. Fitness secrets I unveiled: A proper diet and regular workout, at least once a day can do wonders to your body. In fact, I was so dedicated to losing weight, I started working out twice a day. How do I stay motivated? I keep looking at my old photographs to stay motivated. I have also realised that exercising has not only helped me shed a lot of kilos, but it has also helped me to overcome my insecurities and made me the confident person that I am today. Weight loss: "I lost 50 kilos to shut down the haters!" What’s the most difficult part of being overweight? The worst part is being overweight makes you incredibly insecure about your looks. After that comes not being able to fit into the dresses of your choice. Even daily activities like walking and climbing stairs became very difficult for me. To add to my woes, everyone in my friend circle was healthy and fit, hence, I felt left out. What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? All I want is to be fit and weigh around 50 kgs What are the lifestyle changes you made? I started walking as much as I could. I made exercising my first priority and started eating only healthy, home-cooked food which was low in calories.

What was the lowest point for you? When I first stated gymming, I could hardly notice any difference in my body. Thankfully, soon enough, I realised that this was happening because I was not following a proper diet. I started following a healthy diet along with the workout regime. Reducing 50 kilos did not happen overnight, I had to keep myself motivated even during the times I wanted to give up the most.

What’s the most difficult part of being overweight? The worst part of being overweight is the constant taunts, jibes and body shaming that you have to face. Sadly, people do not realise how much their comments can hurt someone and constantly treat your weight as something to joke about. Also, there were times that I would see a beautiful dress displayed on a mannequin but had to walk away because I knew that it would not fit me.

How do you ensure you don’t lose focus? My old clothes and photographs are a constant reminder that I need to stay focused, else I will go down that path again.

Lesson learnt from weight loss: The one thing that I have learnt from weight loss is that you need to do it for yourself, rather than for anyone else. If someone tries to body shame you, stay shut and let your transformation give the reply.
