Ghanaian artist Wendy Shay has opened up about how online trolls nearly ended her music career.
Describing herself as the most bullied artist in Ghana, Wendy revealed in an interview with Adesope Shopsydoo on the Afrobeats Podcast that she faced constant criticism and ridicule, particularly from music lovers who believed she was living in the shadow of the late Ebony.
The intense trolling even led her mother to suggest she quit music and leave Ghana for Germany, where she had previously lived.
"My mum told me to quit and come back to Germany because it was crazy and it affected everyone in my family. Let me chip in this. Do you know that some of my relatives were even kinda shy to associate with me at that time," she said.
Though the trolling took a toll, Wendy expressed understanding for her family's reaction, acknowledging how difficult it was for them to endure the ridicule.
“Imagine they take your face and make you look like an old woman, then they start trolling you, laughing at you, telling you you're not talented enough. It was crazy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but it built me," she said.
Despite the backlash, Wendy Shay noted that she still has loyal supporters who continue to enjoy her music.
Since entering the music scene, she has earned several accolades, including awards at both the 3Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards, proving her resilience and talent in the face of adversity.
