Head coach of the Ghana national football team, Otto Addo, has welcomed Derrick Kohn’s decision to represent Ghana, describing the defender as a valuable addition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Kohn, who was born in Hamburg, switched his international allegiance from Germany to Ghana in November 2025 and made his debut in a 2-0 defeat to Japan national football team during the Kirin Cup.
The 27-year-old has been included in Ghana’s squad for upcoming friendlies against the Austria national football team and Germany national football team.
Otto Addo on Kohn's nationality switch
“We are happy that he has chosen Ghana,” Addo said, noting that Kohn made a strong impression during his first appearances for the national team.
“He has a very good chance of being at the World Cup,” he added.
Kohn’s versatility is seen as a key asset, with the defender capable of operating in multiple roles on the left side. Currently playing for Union Berlin under coach Steffen Baumgart, he has featured regularly as a wing-back this season, making 25 league appearances.
Addo believes that flexibility could prove crucial as Ghana fine-tune their tactical approach ahead of the tournament.
“We have many good wingers. But it depends on the opponent and the situation; we are flexible,” he explained.
The Ghana coach also praised Kohn’s development at club level, highlighting his contribution to Union Berlin’s stable campaign.
“His development at Union Berlin is very good… Overall, it’s been a good season and things are moving in the right direction,” Addo said.
With competition for places intensifying, Kohn’s form and adaptability could make him a key figure as the Black Stars prepare for football’s biggest stage in North America.
