Lawyers representing Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, and his company Akonta Mining have indicated their intention to apply for a court order to compel the prosecution to release additional documents, which they insist are crucial to their defence.
The two are currently facing trial over allegations that they allowed mining activities to take place on their Samreboi concession without the necessary regulatory approvals.
At Tuesday’s hearing, November 25, which was scheduled as a case management conference, lead defence counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi informed the court that the defence was dissatisfied with the disclosures made by the State so far.
According to the prosecution, all documents they intend to rely on during the trial were filed on October 31 and November 11, and no further materials would be submitted.
However, Appiah-Kubi disagreed, stating that the defence had anticipated additional disclosures, including materials that may not necessarily be tendered as evidence but could still support the defence during case preparation.
He explained that although the defence had already prepared a formal application for full disclosure, it had not yet been filed, hence their request for more time to complete the process.
The presiding judge subsequently directed the defence to file and properly serve the motion on the prosecution once it is ready for hearing.
The court also ordered the accused persons to submit the names and residential addresses of all witnesses they intend to call, should the prosecution succeed in establishing a prima facie case against them.
The case has been adjourned to December 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., when the defence’s application for additional disclosures is expected to be heard.
