Former Ghanaian striker Yahaya Mohammed has expressed concerns about the current lack of sponsor interest in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), citing the league's diminished appeal as a key factor behind this decline.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Mohammed, who had stints at clubs such as Asante Kotoko, Aduana Stars, and OGC Nice, noted that the league's attractiveness has significantly waned in recent years.

He pointed out that during his playing days, the league enjoyed strong corporate interest, with companies like Coca-Cola even showing a desire to sponsor the GHALCA Top Four tournament.

"At this moment, the Ghana Premier League is not attractive. Sponsors were eager to partner with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in the past," Mohammed recalled.

"But now, we see that local players are opting for leagues in countries like Rwanda and Ethiopia, where there are better incentives and support."

One of the major reasons Mohammed attributed to the lack of sponsorship was the poor television coverage of the league, which he believes discourages potential corporate backers from investing in it.

"The TV coverage is not good enough, and all these factors discourage the corporate world from investing in the league," he explained.

The Ghana Premier League, now heading into its 10th matchday, is facing a sponsorship vacuum after BetPawa withdrew midway through the previous season.
