2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: “Mali will frustrate Ghana’s qualification chances” – Otto Addo

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has admitted that the Black Stars face a stern challenge from Mali as they look to strengthen their grip on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The four-time African champions squandered a golden opportunity to extend their lead in Group I after conceding late in a 1-1 draw against Chad in N’Djamena last Thursday. That result left the group wide open ahead of Monday’s Matchday 8 showdown at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Speaking to the media, Addo urged full concentration from his players, stressing that Mali will fight hard to derail Ghana’s campaign.
“We are not at the World Cup yet. We have to fight for this, we have to give our lives for this,” Addo said.
“Our opponents will do everything possible to stop us from getting there, so it’s game by game — no underrating, nothing. Mali I’m sure nobody will underrate them; everybody knows they are good.
“I am not worried. I know we will put everything in, but we have to be concentrated until the last minute. As long as we have it in our own hands, I am positive. To keep it in our own hands, we have to win.”
The group dynamics shifted again on Sunday when Comoros defeated the Central African Republic 2-0 to move within one point of leaders Ghana on 15. Madagascar sit third with 13, while Mali trail in fourth with 12 points heading into the Accra clash.
Victory for Ghana would see them reach 19 points, tightening their grip on top spot with just two games left to play in October.
