GAF could end galamsey crisis if given autonomy- Security Consultant

Security Consultant, Richard Kumadoe, has stated that the Ghana Armed Forces possess the capability to put an end to the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis, but political interference continues to undermine their efforts.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, August 16, 2025, Mr. Kumadoe stated that the military could tackle the galamsey issue swiftly if granted full autonomy.
However, he argued that political leaders frequently issue conflicting directives that hinder the effectiveness of military operations.
“We as law enforcement officers see politicians and civilians as people who want to play hide and seek. If you leave this operation in the hands of the military, they would have dealt with it in no time. However, you create a psychological problem for them when you ask them to go to the place, and you are the same person holding their hands,” he said.
He acknowledged that the military, as a state institution, operates under civilian oversight. However, he stressed that this has created a situation where soldiers are forced to follow commands that often contradict their professional judgment.
Mr. Kumadoe concluded by stressing that unless political agendas are removed from the fight against galamsey, the nation will continue to struggle in combating the menace, despite having capable and well-trained security forces.
